(NOTE: I keep a daily journal whose entries will at times be published here. I compare my daily mullings with those of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, who did the same thing - wrote to himself. I write first then consider the next Marcus Meditation read in sequence. Sometimes the similarity is eerie. As today.
The sun has risen again. Now while that event has historically been considered the epitome of certainty, the more we learn about the Universe the more certain that we are that EVENTUALLY it will not. There is a clockwork involved in Natural events. An inevitability, unavoidable. It has a hand in our lives ensuring that we all know that each of us is eventually going to die. What is less certain is whether we will live.
Yes, I know you are alive, you are reading this. But are you living, not as the grass lives, nor as humans live, but as YOU should?
Do not minimize that question!
As you should. You are human, and with that status comes responsibilities, the Shoulds. Name another life form that has shoulds. You can't because there are none. So what are the shoulds? We humans have been seeking that answer for tens of thousands of years.
My beliefs offer the idea that we are bound to join into communities whose members all help each achieve Excellence. So that our within (soul, heart, mind) can grow fast and far enough to avert the inevitable Natural destruction that awaits everything in the Universe - including the sun.
Our Earth is showing signs that its capacity to sustain humanity is running out: an inevitable certainty. Logic would suggest that we need another planet - Mars, perhaps. But Mars needs a whole lot more than some compost to support us. We need to develop the within (technology) to a point where we can reside on Mars.
This entry got to Mars pretty quickly. There's too much in this conversation for just one entry. So this is the first in a series that will look at where Human destiny lies.
Marcus - Asia, Europe, are cornerstones of the universe; all the sea a drop in the universe; Athos a little clod of the universe; all the present time is a point in eternity. All things are little, changeable, perishable. All things come from thence, from that universal ruling power either directly proceeding or by way of sequence. And accordingly the lion's gaping jaws, and that which is poisonous, and every harmful thing as a thorn, as mud, are after products of the Grand and Beautiful. Do not then imagine that they are of another kind from that which the dost venerate, but from a just opinion of the source of it all.
