In my last post I mentioned the importance of Belonging as the Emotional component of our base. The two days of Mulling on this have elevated the question: Where do I belong?
The physical response to the question will speak of a geographic location. Home. A specified town, city, state, country, planet, etc. Intellectually I belong where my talents can be best used - job and avocation. Spiritually I belong here, within the totality of God's Nature. Alive. Growing myself and contributing to the growth of others.
And emotional belonging? This requires others. And not just any others, special others.
This truly starts with your mother. Her unconditional love plants the seed that allows all other levels of our existence to accept with total clarity that I belong alive. My life matters. I am of value. Any and all success grows from this self-belief.
For the rest our our lives we rely on this self-belief to be the base of our base. The tricky part is that we change. We grow. We learn more about ourselves and the world around us so that we seek the sanction for our exchange of capabilities from wider and wider circles. Your father, siblings, aunts and uncles, cousins, close friends. All help maintain that self-belief even in these newer contexts.
We all need to be loved for who we truly are; as we each define ourselves. We forever seek that unconditional love to reinforce the base we have Now so that we can grow to achieve a new base and start this all over again.
